Professional Palliative Care (PC) education needs to focus
(1) on the proper assessment of PC patients,
(2) on the management of pain and other symptoms, and
(3) on the use of proper medications.
Palliative Care (PC) related problems constitute a growing public health concern in Saudi Arabia (SA) where is it
not taught in medical schools in formal curriculum.
To understand the comfort level of Family Medicine (FM) Residents in manage Palliative Care (PC) cases. Assess the need for formal training in Palliative Care (PC)
skills during FM residency. All FM residents at the center were asked to complete a survey. The responses were 48
from 52 surveys.
FPs has minimal training in palliative care skills .They identify Palliative Care (PC) formal education as vital part of their training.
86% felt that the majority of patients with cancer pain were under medication. While, only 20% believed that
symptoms management control in their own practice setting was good or very good. Poor Palliative Care (PC) assessment was
rated by 85%. Only 10% had prior training in delivering bad news; 20% in pain control and symptom management.
86% were uncomfortable discussing patient serious illness or impending death; 86% were uncomfortable
discussing end of life care. 100% agreed that Palliative Care (PC) training is an important part in FM residency
