Conclusion

It appeared that self-directed learning by using CAI seemed to be a teaching method that was accepted by most students.

An example of CAI (Lab: Disposition of pentobarbital in rat ) is able to display in the details

Background

CAI for some topics in Pharmacology were  developed by Department of Pharmacology, Phramongkutklao College of Medicine for self – directed learning. Thus, the  medical cadets  ’ opinion  about  such learning experiences were investigated in this study

Summary of Work

Descriptive study was employed. The 104 questionnaires of each CAI  were distributed  to  third-year preclinical medical cadets who were enrolled in the curriculum during 2011. Data were analyzed for each CAI. The  questionnaire of each CAI  consisted  of  2  parts, 1. General behavior of students in using computer, 2. Six aspects  of  the  learning activity on  each CAI. Each specific  question  had  a  possible  score  of  1  to  5, whereas 5 indicated strong agreement.

Take-home Messages

However, each topic of CAI should be revised or updated periodically and adequate free time to study CAI should be arranged.

Acknowledgement

The authors wish to thank medical cadets for their co-operation answering the questionniare, all staffs in Department of Pharmacology, Phramongkutklao College of Medicine for their help for all.
Summary of Results

There were 7 specific topics of CAI in the study. As for the first 4 CAIs in first semester, there were 80 (76.92%) respondents for dosage forms, drug development, Lab: Disposition of pentobarbital in rat and 76 (73.08%) respondents for NSAIDs. Positive attitude  were indicated  toward all of them (average score for each CAI ranged from 4.56 - 4.16 ,SD 0.59- 0.89). Whereas the last 3 CAIs in second semester , there were 88 (84.62%) respondents for all of them, as such CAIs were  Lab: ANS drugs , antihypertensive drugs and drugs used in dyslipidemia, Positive attitude  were indicated  toward all of them (average score for each CAI ranged from 4.45 - 4.43 ,SD 0.67- 0.64) as well. There were suggestions from respondents that more  CAIs for other topic should be developed and some more exercises or quiz should be added at the end of each topic. As it would be useful to review the important point for each drug-group and make it easier to prepare themselves for National License examination. However, there were constraints such as limitation of time for self – directed learning and an inconvenience of computer using.
