Background

Simulation organized by interns for interns as one mean

to achieve more proficient and confident junior doctors

– will it work?

As part of their medical training, interns in Gothenburg receive an introductory 2-day course of emergency situation simulation with a computerized doll. Highly appreciated, it is seen as an opportunity to gain confidence in a safe, apologizing environment.

As part of our internship we designed, organized and evaluated a follow-up day of simulation, aiming at further increasing the interns’ confidence and evaluate if “…by interns for interns…” could work.

Summary of Work
  •  Instructor course in simulation for course leaders

  •  Medical case selection and construction of course material

  •  Medical expert recruitment

  •  Practicalities

Summary of Results

Prior to simulation the participants were asked to write down their expectations and concerns. Afterwards they were all asked if “...by intern for interns” simulation was beneficial and met their expectations.

Conclusion

“Am I good enough?”

This was the common denominator, when our fellow interns shared their concerns. Thus showing that interns doubt their knowledge, despite generally very good grades. Simulation works at several levels and eases the interns into good practitioners:

  •  Safe environment – no patient at risk

  •  Validating practical skills

  •  Leadership training

  •  Forgiving – what happens in the group stays in the group

  •  Inspiring – several cases in a short time with expert advice

  •  Adapted to level of knowledge for interns by interns

As a result the interns are better prepared in real life emergency situations having gained confidence in themselves.

Take-home Messages

Simulation by interns for interns is a simple way

to achieve more proficient and confident junior doctors

- IT WORKS!
