Background

E-learning offers many advantages over conventional teaching methods. There is the potential to utilize multimedia applications with interactivity. Interactive e-books offer higher motivation for learners by presenting contents in an interactive, game-based and competitive way. To improve the efficiency of learning and provide a simplified design description, the authors decided to seek editing software for creating interactive multimedia e-books to use in clinical education.

Summary of Work

In this study we choose use of a SimMAGIC e-book software to rapidly create interactive multimedia e-books. In SimMAGIC e-BooK editing software, the simple and clear editing layout, customized editing tools and various content editing functions enable editors to make creative contents of the e-Books and publications quickly. An e-book workshop for the teachers was held in our hospital. They need to take 9 hours of lecture and practice, then hand in their own projects and be judged by experts afterwards.

Summary of Results

In all, 34 teachers finished their e-book projects, including 17 doctors and 17 health care staffs. All e-books are uploaded to the Cloud Bookshelf and can be therefore downloaded to notebooks or tablets by the teachers or students in need. According to the results from the experts, the average score of the health care staff is slightly higher than that of the doctors (83.7 to 81.6). Among these e-books, the score in lecture design is the highest, scoring 4.23 out of 5, followed by Creativity and Teaching Material Manufacture, which is 4.06 and 4.02, respectively; Contrarily, the score in Program Application is the lowest scoring 3.86; the teachers’ satisfaction score towards the workshop is 4.4 out of 5. All the teachers unanimously considered SimMagic software suitable for editing e-books in clinical education.

Conclusion

SimMAGIC Software is an excellent tool to design interactive multimedia e-book and should be tailored to an educational institution's requirements and produced quickly by hospital staffs at minimal cost.
