Background

From the previous studies, chewing gum can benefit some areas of human cognition and can increased the heart rate. The researcher said that chewing gum increased the flow of oxygen to the regions of the brain. More oxygen can keep people alert and improve their reflexes.

Summary of Work

Objective: To evaluate the new appropriate way for improve the short-term order memory in the classroom; squeezing the ball.

Method: (1) Test the hypothesis that squeezing ball can increase heart rate; Recorded heart rate of 30 participants by heart rate monitoring while squeezing ball at baseline, 30, 60, 90 and 120 seconds.

(2) The subjects were 60 1st year medical students of Suranaree University of Technology. Two divided groups made with equal scores of short-term memory test,IQ and Gender. During remembering the word from the paper which take time total 2 minutes, group 1 squeezed the ball and group 2 didn’t squeeze the ball. Both group have to write the words after remember as many as possible in 30 seconds. Statistical analysis by t-test

Summary of Results

No different in age, gender, IQ in both groups. Heart rate increased with the time (p < 0.01). Efficiency of word memory numbers in group 1 is more than group 2 (13.23 and 11.23 respectively) (p= 0.002).

Conclusion

Squeezing the ball technique increased heart rate and improve the efficiency of the short term order memory cause of oxygen uptake and squeezing ball may be increase the concentration. This finding is the choice for improve memory methods in the classroom.

Take-home Messages

Because subject in our reserch was first year medical students of Suranaree University of Technology in a small group. Result may be different in other samples.

Acknowledgement

I would like to express my sincere thanks to my research advisor, Dr. Naporn Ungarporn for her invaluable help and constant encouragement throughout the course of this research. I am most grateful for her teaching and advice, not only the research methodologies but also many other methodologies in life. I would not have achieved this far and this research would not have been completed without all the support that I have always received from her.
