Blended learning offers new possibilities for additional education. Before entering a formal course E-learning can have different goals. Questions in an e-learning module can guide participants to the main subject of the course. In order to achieve equal knowledge in human anatomy an introduction course human anatomy can be offered in an e-learning module.
The new national registar-training programme in Rehabilitation Medicine (RM) in The Netherlands is contructed around rehabilitation themes and the CANMEDS competencies.
Is blended learning of extended value in the national course Orthopedic footwear?

80 specialist registrars in RM had access to the eletronic learning environment in Blackboard®. Registars were ad random allocated to the groups. Group A: standard training material and e-learning modules about anatomy of foot and ankle and orthopedic shoe prescription. Group B: standard training material: test questions an study book about orthopedic foorwear.
Pre- and post tests were taken with MC questions in both groups. A learning style test was part of the assessment.

Distribution of learning styles over group A and B
In this survey there were no differences found in test results between the small blended learning group and the control group. Technical issues in the e-learning module may have caused motivational problems to the RM registars and may have influenced the results.
Blended learning needs educational and technical expertise for adequate evaluation in larger testing groups.
