Background

   The central sterile supply department is very important for running hospital. The workers of this department have a risk to expose the patient’s secretion or body fluid including the needles and blades which left in the used sterile sets from other department. Also a risk to be harmed by working condition, working environment and ergonomics.  So the perception of workers and medical personnel about occupational health and the health polity to prevent work-related diseases and hazards by the director of the hospital are very important to make them work safety and healthy.

Summary of Work

     Walk-through surveying was applied to collect the information about work place environment , hazards and system. In-depth interviewing was applied to collect data from the hospital director, nurses, physical therapist and 11 others HCWs from CSSD. The secondary data of occupational medicine and infectious control section were collected also. Descriptive statistics and content analysis were used for data analysis. 

Summary of Results

   The hospital director emphasize on policy of healthy working and safety workplace. Working environment has been evaluated by the occupational medicine (light, heat, noise, dust, and environment). The appropriate health promotion program was design individually for HCWs. such as aerobic dance and dietary control for HCWs who has high BMI or has DM , hypertension as underlying disease. Thai traditional massage and muscle relaxation course have been provided for anyone who has myofascial pain (muscle pain) from work also. Additionally, physical therapists and nurses give them safety working education.

Conclusion

   From data analysis, it can be concluded that the most HCWs had good perception and appropriate practices to prevent the work-related disease and hazards from working in CSSD.      

Take-home Messages

   The hospital policy and HCWs’s perception about work-related disease and hazards prevention are essential for healthy working and safety workplace which will make the HCWs feel more confident working in the CSSD and can reduce the incidence of work-related disease.
