A seminar of Minimal Invasive Surgery for third year students of MD degree presented as a tool to teach interdisciplinarity
Background

XXIth century medical students should know some basic principles in Minimal Invasive Surgery (MIS) even if students are not thinking of becoming surgeons.

  •  MIS  diagnostic and therapeutic exponential advances  will modify their future decisions to provide high-quality, patient-centered care.
  • Second, a minimal invasive approach  to solve complex problems is a good model for introducing Interdisciplinarity (integration of technical, medical and surgical disciplines) as a new educational model.

Summary of Work

A seminar in Laparoscopic Surgery (LS) and MIS for third year students of Medical Degree was developed focusing in the following points:

       1. MIS contextualization in the Diagnostic and Therapeutic Surgical Procedures Course.

       2. ICT resources for the seminar and course.

       3. The importance of LS and MIS for undergraduate and postgradute students.

       4. Conceptual background.

       5. Technical background for LS.

       6. Fundamentals of laparoscopic surgery (FLS).

       7. From LS to MIS and MIP (Minimal Invasive Procedures): technological innovation based in interdisciplinarity.

       8. Self-assessment and Bibliography.

Summary of Results

Interdisciplinarity was related to the previous points:

1&2. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for medical students.

3. Professionalism and Career Development.

4. Critical Thinking. Learning curve.

5&6. MIS and Engineering, Industry and R&D.

7. Interventional Endoscopy, Interventional Radiology, Telecommunication, Robotics, Evidence Based Medicine, Medical Societies, Practice Guidelines, Learning curve, Accountability.

8. Self-assesment test.

Conclusion

Surgeons involved in teaching Minimal Invasive surgery (MIS) to undergraduate students are in a privileged position to introduce an INTERDISCIPLINARY approach in MD curriculum.
